The Explorer's Code

Before visiting a Shrine we trust Explorers will keep to particular Cleansing Rituals, that we may keep all Explorers as safe as is possible from Those Pathogens Which Live In The Air. SHRINES is, at its core, about connecting safely with others in solitude. As such, there are tenets that must not be broken:

I. Your participation in SHRINES is your guarantee that you have read, understand, and will abide by these rules and recommendations for your safety and the safety of all Explorers.

II. If you are experiencing symptoms of sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, fever, upset stomach, diarrhea, or are easily winded; if you have travelled and not quarantined or if you have received a positive coronavirus test within fourteen days, or are awaiting a pending test, please do not undertake any journey to participate in SHRINES. Your abstaining from Exploration creates a path for others. Trust that this experience will return in the future.

III. The most essential equipment for visitation of any Shrine is a facemask. Please ensure yours fits securely around the mouth and nose, and that you do not touch or remove your mask at any point during Exploration. Please do not take part in SHRINES without one. Though you may never see them, trust your fellow Explorers will wear theirs to help protect you.

IV. If you do come across other Explorers upon your journey, please treat them with space and patience. While others are performing a ritual, please stay behind the Shrine’s Waypoint and at least 15 feet away at all times. Most rituals take less than 15 minutes. Please give other Explorers the benefit of silence and solitude.

V. All Explorers will begin their engagement with a Shrine by performing The Cleansing Ritual, detailed on each Shrine page in the guidebook and below.

The Cleansing Ritual

When you arrive at any Shrine, look for the Waypoint nearby. On it, you will find among other things hand sanitizer and many other cleansing ritual components necessary for that experience. Before you begin the Shrine’s ritual:

I. Please use the sanitizer provided to thoroughly cleanse your hands. Once cleansed, avoid touching your face.

II. Avoid eating, drinking or removing your mask at any time while visiting a Shrine.

III. Please participate in the communal act of keeping a Shrine clean. Some rituals will ask for further cleansing of Shrine components, or the wearing of additional protection like gloves. Please do not leave waste or anything else behind, especially that which may have been in contact with the face or hands.

Though you will not encounter them, there are Guides who tend to the SHRINES, keeping them as safe as possible for Explorers. The Guides have consulted with a Scientist and Doctor to ensure they are undertaking the best possible practices to keep everyone safe and reduce risk as much as possible. However, your participation in these cleansing rituals will ensure a safe exploration for all. We ask that all who participate in SHRINES take this cleansing ritual seriously and perform them diligently.

These COVID Safety guidelines were created in consultation with Dr. Taylor Winkleman, DVM, MPH.
