Shrine To Domestic Magic
Shrine to Domestic Magic is dedicated to rare and delicious secrets, and the exchange thereof. It takes the form of a barter where the currency is unorthodox culinary knowledge. It is for Explorers who seek a taste of curiosity and for those who seek everyday wonder.
"Following one of The Tarot Reading’s guiding principles, Nebeker and Katz aimed for a wide variety in mediums, even beyond theatre artists...and so, the night featured yoga, hip-hop, and poetry, in addition to monologues and a lot of miscellany.
Nebeker isn’t joking when he says they had hoped to have a chef."
.—“The Tarot Reading experiment - a vision for the future?” by Marshall Bradshaw (2016)
the first ever review of the first ever Arcanists’ production The Tarot Reading I

Visitors are welcome on the property within hours of availability for the purpose of visiting the Shrine.

Note: The Arcanists’ Lab is the home of two small dogs in the care of our gracious host. Shrine to Domestic Magic is located in the side yard, outside the fenced yard, but the dogs may take note of your presence and bark when you arrive.
Should Explorers discover the dogs behind their fence at any time during their journey, though the dogs are small and adorable, please do not attempt to touch or pet them through the fence for your safety.
Should Explorers wish to visit the Shrine and ensure the dogs stay inside, email Executive Producer Quill Nebeker at quill@thetarotreading.org.

“According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the word "Arcanist" (Ar-CANE-ist) comes from the Latin word arcanum ("secret"), and was used originally in the 18th c. in Europe to describe someone who knew the secret to making particular kinds of pottery, especially true porcelain. Today, it's used to describe a craftsperson who has a secret or intimate knowledge of manufacture.
We chose the name The Arcanists inspired in no small part by the name of our first and flagship show, The Tarot Reading, which is arcane in the sense that it is a bit magical. We also chose the name to reflect our dedication to process, and manufacture, which for us takes the form of iterative performance series. In connecting artists and audiences in the way we do, we create a space for those artists to impart the intimate secrets of their craft.”

The Arcanists' Kitchen, A Ritual
When visiting this Shrine, you are invited to perform a Ritual, entitled The Arcanists' Kitchen. Tap or click below to read the Ritual Instructions. Please feel free peruse the instructions in advance, but know that there may be spoilers if you do.
Come Prepared
- Bring a non-perishable food item with you. You will use it to make an offering to the Shrine which will be collected and donated to AFAC. Their most requested items are low sugar and low sodium including canned tuna, canned soups, canned vegetables, canned tomatoes, peanut butter, and cereal.
- If you arrive and do not have a food offering, or if you cannot afford to do so, some will be available on-site. If you are hungry and need food, please take what you need.
- Bring a Recipe That Matters To You. It can be intricate like a full set of instructions or simple like a one-line tip or trick. The only requirement is that it must have some personal significance. Anything that makes food tastier and has personal significance is a Recipe That Matters. You may wish to copy it down on paper or a phone, but bringing a recipe from memory works just fine.

SHRINES was produced by The Arcanists, Inc. We produce live, interactive, creative nonfiction performances in ongoing series to build recurring platforms that foster direct, long-term connection among artists and audiences.
If you enjoy SHRINES, and want to support more affordable, innovative art, please consider making a donation. Big or small, every contribution helps build a more connected world.

About the Designer

Marshall Bradshaw (he/him) is a SHRINES designer, analog game designer and immersive theatre designer, performer, and critic. He designs games about life with multiple sclerosis, practicing apologies & forgiveness, and how rad Mass Effect 2 fan art is. He has performed in immersive theatre with TBD Immersive and the American Immersion Theater. And, somewhere between those two art-forms, he has facilitated weekend-long larps in New Orleans, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and elsewhere. Discovering a log with a powerless electrical outlet drilled into it sitting on a rock in a stream propelled him into a months long project curating a fake (?) found art museum in a public park, and he is thrilled to unleash that energy on the entire DC area.
