The Explorer's Code

Before visiting a Shrine we trust Explorers will keep to particular Cleansing Rituals, that we may keep all Explorers as safe as is possible from Those Pathogens Which Live In The Air. SHRINES is, at its core, about connecting safely with others in solitude. As such, there are tenets that must not be broken:

I. Your participation in SHRINES is your guarantee that you have read, understand, and will abide by these rules and recommendations for your safety and the safety of all Explorers.

II. If you are experiencing symptoms of sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, fever, upset stomach, diarrhea, or are easily winded; if you have travelled and not quarantined or if you have received a positive coronavirus test within fourteen days, or are awaiting a pending test, please do not undertake any journey to participate in SHRINES.  Your abstaining from Exploration creates a path for others. Trust that this experience will return in the future.

III. The most essential equipment for visitation of any Shrine is a facemask. Please ensure yours fits securely around the mouth and nose, and that you do not touch or remove your mask at any point during Exploration. Please do not take part in SHRINES without one. Though you may never see them, trust your fellow Explorers will wear theirs to help protect you.

IV. If you do come across other Explorers upon your journey, please treat them with space and patience. While others are performing a ritual, please stay behind the Shrine’s Waypoint and at least 15 feet away at all times. Most rituals take less than 15 minutes. Please give other Explorers the benefit of silence and solitude.

V. All Explorers will begin their engagement with a Shrine by performing The Cleansing Ritual detailed on each Shrine page in the guidebook.

Shrine To Life Cycles

Shrine To Life Cycles is dedicated to that which grows around and within us and makes up who we are, and that which dies to feed the undergrowth. It takes the form of an altar of wreaths inside a tree, a ritual to uncover and give name to the fibers of our being. It is for Explorers seeking cultivation, interconnection, and natural wonder.
“When trees grow together, nutrients and water can be optimally divided among them all so that each tree can grow into the best tree it can be. If you "help" individual trees by getting rid of their supposed competition, the remaining trees are bereft...some individuals photosynthesize like mad until sugar positively bubbles along their trunk. As a result, they are fit and grow better, but they aren't particularly long-lived. This is because a tree can be only as strong as the forest that surrounds it.”
—Peter Wohlleben, Hidden Life of Trees (2015)

RhizomeDC is a nonprofit community arts space located in the Takoma neighborhood of Washington DC.  It is dedicated to promoting creativity as a force for personal empowerment and community engagement, and hosts programs that promote creativity in all its forms including concerts, workshops, performances, talks, exhibitions, and demonstration projects in areas such as art, music, technology, theater, local food, poetry, as well as in more esoteric fields of knowledge. (Rhizome DC)
“Let us summarize the principal characteristics of a rhizome: unlike trees or their roots, the rhizome connects any point to any other point, and its traits are not necessarily linked to traits of the same nature.”
—Gilles Deleuze & Felix Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus (1987)

About the Designer

Picture
Deb Sivigny (she/her) is co-lead on SHRINES and an award-winning scenic and costume designer, writer and educator who gets excited about making people believe in the impossible. You might remember the time she turned a house into an airport terminal then a Korean restaurant, or summoned the dead from a doll; or took audiences to several different afterlives… Her work has also been on various stages in DC and around the country. She is currently working on an environmental piece about North Korean refugees, and she has been working with her home team at Rorschach Theatre on Distance Frequencies, sending folx to different places around the city. Her academic research includes “design-driven” works inspired by literature and personal experience and design dramaturgy. She is on the faculty at George Mason University.
